is one of the few historical monuments on Ještěd that has been preserved to this day. But a few years ago, it began to tilt unsafely...
It was clear that the obelisk, erected in 1838 on a rock near the mountain hotel, would need to be secured to prevent it from falling. Together with experts from the Jizera-Yested Mountain Association, we managed to repair the stone in 2019 - we were looking forward to finding some treasure underneath, or at least the authors' legacy for future generations. In the end, even the repair itself was quite an exciting event. The repair was initiated and financed by the Ještěd Hotel, and the people from the mountain association provided the organization and expertise.
The massive obelisk reminds us that in 1820 Prince Rohan bought the southern slopes of Ještěd and the entire Czech-Kubian estate. It was he who had a pointed column with the emblem of his family placed on the top of the mountain. The border of the Rohan and Clam-Gallas estates ran across Ještěd at that time. As the old parish chronicle in Světlá records, the "Rohan Stone" was erected on Ještěd in 1838. In addition to marking the border, it also commemorates the visit of Adela Rohan, who ascended here in 1838. The weathered letters ROHANSTEIN can still be found on the base, covered with greenish lichen.
If you face the stone obelisk, you will have the Jested building on your right and the refreshment terrace on your left. At that moment, you are standing on the former Rohanský estate with your left foot and looking into the Podještědí region. With your right foot, however, you are standing on the land that used to belong to the Clam-Gallas estate. In June 2012, the Ještěd Hotel had the dilapidated stone obelisk cleaned and renovated, and in the summer of 2019 it underwent major repairs, mainly to put it back in place in a stable manner.
